Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., and Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., co-sponsored the bill, which is called the Location Privacy Protection Act of 2011. The lawmakers said the bill "would close loopholes in current federal law to ensure that consumers know what location information is being collected ... and allow them to decide if they want to share it." Despite the numeral, Windows Phone is definitely a version 1 product, very clever in some places and very dumb in others. It shows signs of scant development and design effort in some areas, but whether that’s by accident or deliberate dumbing down isn’t entirely obvious. But now another research firm, IDC, has come to the same conclusion, although it thinks Microsoft will take an extra year to topple Apple. Gartner also believes Nokia - despite its current crises - will drive WP7 and its successors to a dominant position, although still lagging Android. According to IDC's forecasts, WP7 will command 20.3% of the global smartphone market by 2015, behind Android at 43.8% and iOS at 16.9%. The latest Microsoft move in this direction is the discontinuation of the My Phone service and Windows Marketplace for Mobile Web site for those customers. On June 8, the Microsoft Windows Phone team sent mail to Windows Mobile 6.x users notifying them of plans to cut these two offerings. The Marketplace for Mobile web site will no longer be available after July 15, even though the service will still be available on phones. The My Phone backup service will be phased out between August 7 through October 6, according to Microsoft officials. Microsoft is moving some of Windows Mobile 6.x users’ content stored on MyPhone — but not videos, music, documents and favorites — to its free Windows Live SkyDrive online storage service. Due to support from advertising revenues the program is now free-of-charge and subscription-free. Ads featured in SPB TV only last as long as channel buffering takes and preserve the best user experience. In addition to existing features that include quick channel previews, a TV guide for more than 150 channels in over 20 languages, picture-in-picture mode, fast channel launching and switching, the new version offers also a video on demand (VOD) option. With this new feature the users can control what they are watching and when. Unlike broadcast TV, VOD provides greater choice and interactivity. Another significant enhancement is the Advanced Video Codec (H.264) support which improves video quality. As a result even with substantial lower bitrates the resolution is strongly improved. SPB TV 2.0 also allows users with low speed mobile network connections to watch TV. SPB TV also works on iPhone, Symbian, Android, BlackBerry and WebOS smartphones. Last month SPB TV reached the one million users milestone. Mobile TV watching behaviour differs across countries. For example 71% of US users use SPB TV via 3G while in Greece and Poland only 10% of users use 3G and others use WiFi. "Taking all the statistics and feedback collected from our users into consideration, we created the new version of SPB TV, which not only offers our users better video quality but is also available to all Windows Mobile users absolutely free," said Sebastian-Justus Schmidt, CEO of SPB Software. SPB TV is also available as a solution for mobile operators. SPB TV Mobile Operator's Solution allows carriers to couple SPB's proven solution with their own infrastructure and various subscription models. Three mobile operators worldwide have already deployed SPB TV based mobile TV solutions. SPB TV 2.0 for Windows Phones running Windows Mobile 5 and later Professional and Standard editions, qVGA, VGA, Square QVGA, HVGA, and WVGA screen resolutions are supported. The application can be downloaded for free from http://spb.com, there is also no monthly fee for using it. The application is ad-supported: an advertisement is shown every time user switches the channel while the stream is buffering. SPB TV for touchscreens product page |
