Handmark? Pocket Express? Tops "Best Product" Voting For Its Category At CES Showstoppers? Event

Popular Wireless Information Service for Cellular Phones Garners Most Votes at Key Media Reception

KANSAS CITY, MO ? (17 January, 2006) ? Handmark?, a global leader in mobile media, announced today that its Pocket Express? wireless information service led the "Best Wireless, Mobility, Communications and Home Automation" voting at ShowStoppers?, one of the top media events held during the 2006 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on January 5th, 2006.  The voting indicated the appeal of Pocket Express among attendees which included many of the world?s leading journalists from the technology and general interest media, along with other analysts and decision-makers.

Pocket Express is an integrated, dynamic information service that delivers news, weather, sports, stocks, movies, maps, 411 and more to a wide range of cell phones, PDAs and other wireless devices.  The personalized Pocket Express experience is faster than mobile web surfing by orders of magnitude, and the intuitive PageOne interface serves up content with a fraction of the clicks required by mobile browsing.

ShowStoppers, held January 5 at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas, brought together new and exciting products from many of the world?s most prominent technology companies with hundreds of reporters and reviewers.  At the reception, attendees can view the products and conduct in-depth interviews with company executives.  ShowStoppers is an exclusive event open only to media, industry analysts, and select investment firms.

"Handmark exhibits at ShowStoppers because it is one of the most efficient and direct ways to connect with the worldwide press.  Having Pocket Express lead the ?best product? voting in its category at ShowStoppers is a distinct honor," said Douglas Edwards, co-founder and chief marketing officer of Handmark.  "This response affirms the popularity Pocket Express has achieved in the marketplace.  There isn?t a faster, more complete, or more useful wireless service than Pocket Express."

Pocket Express puts a wealth of unique and essential services at the fingertips of wireless mobile device users.  For example, the service can quickly map any point in North America and provide turn-by turn directions between any two street addresses.  It not only provides movie reviews, but also displays show times for movies at nearby theaters and allows users to order movie tickets online for select theaters.

Pocket Express also offers local weather reports, displays customized stock market quotes, and gives near real-time sports scores.  It can provide business and personal phone numbers, perform reverse phone number and address searches, and find a person or business without paying traditional directory assistance charges.

ShowStoppers "Best Product" voting was conducted during the event by wireless short message service (SMS) using Pangolin?s Interactive Messaging Unlimited. The innovative, new technology from Pangolin SMS, based in Orlando, Florida, was implemented to tally the live vote. Pangolin creates interactive video display software for events and meetings of all kinds. The software converts cell phone text and picture messages into live graphics and video in a dynamic setting. This allows messages from cell phones, Blackberries and other wireless devices to be displayed on large projection video systems.

Socket Communications Unveils Industry First Cordless Ring Scanner for Bluetooth Enabled Mobile Computers

Lightweight Device Fits Comfortably on Index Finger for Hands Free Scanning Exclusive Ruggedized Liquidmetal Case Design offers Extreme Durability

Socket Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: SCKT), an innovative provider of mobile productivity products, today unveiled the Cordless Ring Scanner (CRS) 9P. A first of its kind product, the CRS uses an exclusive Liquidmetal? housing for extreme durability. The CRS combines the power of laser bar code scanning with the convenience of Bluetooth wireless technology to provide an efficient, hands-free solution that makes scanning as simple as pointing a finger.

?The underpinnings of many industries involve moving items from point A to point B in the most efficient and cost-effective way,? said Peter Phillips, vice president of marketing at Socket.

?The Cordless Ring Scanner is extremely beneficial for employees that scan everyday, all day. As a hands free scanning solution, the Cordless Ring Scanner enables users to handle materials, goods and packages quickly and efficiently without picking up and putting down a big, clumsy gun scanner to scan bar codes.?

The CRS 9P is ergonomically designed to fit comfortably on the index finger and utilizes an exclusive Liquidmetal casing, which is over twice the strength of titanium, enabling a lighter, more compact design. The CRS 9P is IP54 compliant for water and dust resistance and can sustain multiple drops from four feet. The CRS 9P also features Fuzzy Logic technology for scanning damaged, poor quality or hard-to-read bar codes. Socket?s exclusive patent-pending Error Proof Protocol ensures that scanned data is correctly received by the mobile computing device and allows for real-time validation of data and error notification to the user.

?The ability to capture data without having to handle a scanner gives an enormous boost to our customer?s workforce efficiency and productivity,? said Scott Allen, sales manager at Infologix, a provider of mobile wireless computing hardware and consulting solutions to the healthcare, industrial, pharmaceutical and enterprise mobility solution markets. ?Bar coding is indispensable in warehouses and distribution environments to maintain inventory accuracy. Using a hands-free scanner such as Socket?s Cordless Ring Scanner will enable our customers to communicate data that is more accurate than the traditional methods of hand written or voice confirmations.?

The CRS 9P is tethered to a Class 1 Bluetooth device that is strapped on the wrist. The Bluetooth wrist device transmits scanned data wirelessly to a mobile computer. The wireless wrist module has a powerful Bluetooth radio that maintains a strong connection to the mobile computer without dangling cables or protruding antennas to slow the user down, restrict their movement or cause potential hazards.

?The Cordless Ring Scanner 9P from Socket is an effective solution for a variety of applications requiring a lightweight, wearable ?hands-free? method of data capture,? said John Walls, managing director of The Barcode Warehouse, a UK based supplier and systems integrator of barcode products. ?There is no doubt that the CRS will prove advantageous in helping us secure new business for many environments, including back office, order/parts picking, warehousing and logistics.?

The CRS 9P includes SocketScan?, the keyboard emulation software that directs scanned data into any Windows, Palm or Symbian application as virtual keystrokes. A Software Developers Kit is available separately for developers who wish to embed control of the CRS into their applications.

    Scanning features

Features a powerful Class 2 laser for demanding scanning applications such as outdoors, long distances or through Mylar or glass
Fuzzy Logic for scanning damaged, poor quality or hard-to-read bar code labels
SocketScan? keyboard emulation software directs scanned data into any Windows, Palm or other application as virtual keystrokes with no need for custom programming
SocketScan allows the user to add Prefix and/or Suffix functions, such as Carriage Return and Tab, to further eliminate manual keystrokes
Supported bar code symbologies can be easily enabled or disabled with SocketScan?s ?Symbology Selector?
SocketScan ?Scan Demo? reports symbology, length and decoded data of any scanned bar code (supported in Windows CE/Mobile and Palm OS)
    2005 Sunrise Date compliant
    Ruggedized Features

Exclusive Liquidmetal construction ? more than two times stronger than titanium
IP54 compliant which protects from dust and water
    Splash proof
    Dust proof
Built to sustain multiple drops from four feet to concrete

Class 1 radio with Bluetooth wireless technology has a maximum range of 300 ft (100 m) if connected to another Class 1 Bluetooth device.
    Uses Bluetooth Serial Port profile
    Connection indicator light
When connected to the Class 2 Bluetooth radio found in many host devices, CRS range should be approximately 50 percent greater when used in an indoor environment and 100 percent greater when used outdoors. Bluetooth range can be affected by many variables and may be significantly greater or shorter than specified.
Socket?s CRS is compatible with the following mobile computers if Bluetooth enabled: Windows Mobile 2003, Windows Mobile 5.0, and Palm OS v5.2 and later. For complete specifications, visit: http://www.socketcom.com/product/RS5500-688.asp
