Description of the Office Outlook 2007 hotfix package (outlook-x-none.msp): April 27, 2010

Issues that this hotfix package fixes

  • You create a yearly recurring event on a Windows Mobile device, and you synchronize the Windows Mobile device with a computer that is running Office Outlook 2007. However, in both the Office Outlook 2007 calendar and on the Windows Mobile device, the recurring event shows that it will occur every 12 years instead of every year (12 months) after you perform the synchronization.

SPB TV for Windows Mobile Smartphones Gets a Major Update

June 8th, 2010 – SPB Software, a leading mobile software developer, has updated the Windows Mobile version of its flagship application SPB TV to version 2.0. Due to support from advertising revenues the program is now free-of-charge and subscription-free. Ads featured in SPB TV only last as long as channel buffering takes and preserve the best user experience.

In addition to existing features that include quick channel previews, a TV guide for more than 150 channels in over 20 languages, picture-in-picture mode, fast channel launching and switching, the new version offers also a video on demand (VOD) option. With this new feature the users can control what they are watching and when. Unlike broadcast TV, VOD provides greater choice and interactivity.

Another significant enhancement is the Advanced Video Codec (H.264) support which improves video quality. As a result even with substantial lower bitrates the resolution is strongly improved. SPB TV 2.0 also allows users with low speed mobile network connections to watch TV.

SPB TV 2.0

SPB TV also works on iPhone, Symbian, Android, BlackBerry and WebOS smartphones. Last month SPB TV reached the one million users milestone. Mobile TV watching behaviour differs across countries. For example 71% of US users use SPB TV via 3G while in Greece and Poland only 10% of users use 3G and others use WiFi.

"Taking all the statistics and feedback collected from our users into consideration, we created the new version of SPB TV, which not only offers our users better video quality but is also available to all Windows Mobile users absolutely free," said Sebastian-Justus Schmidt, CEO of SPB Software.

SPB TV is also available as a solution for mobile operators. SPB TV Mobile Operator's Solution allows carriers to couple SPB's proven solution with their own infrastructure and various subscription models. Three mobile operators worldwide have already deployed SPB TV based mobile TV solutions.

SPB TV 2.0 for Windows Mobile Main Features:

  • Integrated TV Guide with a list of current and upcoming TV shows
  • Unique browser with fast channel launching and switching
  • Quick channel preview (picture-in-picture mode)
  • On-screen control panel
  • Video on Demand
  • Setting a reminder
  • Video quality switcher
  • Advanced Video Codec support

Pricing and Availability

SPB TV 2.0 for Windows Phones running Windows Mobile 5 and later Professional and Standard editions, qVGA, VGA, Square QVGA, HVGA, and WVGA screen resolutions are supported. Microsoft Reveals New Windows Phone Marketplace Policies

Microsoft (NSDQ:MSFT) on Monday gave mobile developers their first look at the application submission and certification policies for its Windows Phone Marketplace, which will take effect when Windows Phone 7 devices arrive later this year.

Windows Phone 7 developers will pay an annual registration fee of $99 to list their apps on the Windows Phone Marketplace, and that price includes the ability to list up to five free apps. Developers will have to pay $19.99 for each additional free app submission, but there's no limit on the number of paid apps they can list.   (Source: Kevin McLaughlin, CRN

Ballmer Acknowledges Microsoft's Smartphone Mistakes

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer used the platform of the D8 Conference on June 3 to acknowledge his company’s missteps in the smartphone space, as well as the strength of competitors such as Apple’s iPhone and the ever-increasing number of Android-powered devices.

A full blow-by-blow of that conversation can be found on this Website, although it lacks the accuracy of a polished transcript.

“We were ahead of this game, and now we find ourselves No. 5 in the market,” Ballmer told The Wall Street Journal’s Walt Mossberg during an onstage question-and-answer session. “We missed a whole cycle. I’ve been quite public about the fact that I’ve made some changes in leadership around our Windows Phone software. We had to do a little cleanup.”  (Source: Nicholas Kolakowski, eWeek)

AT&T Announces New Lower-Priced Wireless Data Plans to Make Mobile Internet More Affordable to More People

AT&T*, the U.S. smartphone leader, today introduced new wireless data plans that make it more affordable for more people to enjoy the benefits of the mobile Internet. Customers can pick the new data plan that best meets their needs – either a $15 per month entry plan or a $25 per month plan with 10 times more data. Current smartphone customers are not required to switch to the new plans, but can choose to do so without a contract extension.

“AT&T helps mobilize everything on the Internet – your favorite web sites, TV shows, music, games and social networks. Virtually everything previously done while sitting at a computer can now be done on the go,” said Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. “To give more people the opportunity to experience these benefits, we’re breaking free from the traditional ‘one-size-fits-all’ pricing model and making the mobile Internet more affordable to a greater number of people.”

Each plan includes unlimited access at no additional charge to more than 20,000 AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots in the U.S. Customers can also use unlimited Wi-Fi at home, in the office or elsewhere if available. AT&T will also help customers manage their wireless data usage by sending free text messages after customers reach different usage intervals and by providing online tools, including a smartphone app that shows monthly usage information.

The new wireless data plans – including a new tethering option – will be available beginning June 7.  Current AT&T voice and texting plans are unchanged.  (Source: Press Release)

Testing finds HSPA+ speeds still no match for LTE

Spirent Communications and Signals Research have put to the test recent industry claims that high-speed packet access plus can deliver comparable download speeds to 4G technologies, and they’ve concluded that HSPA+ may not be as fast as its proponents claim. Testing currently available HSPA+ chipsets over live HSPA+ networks, Spirent and Signals found that while HSPA+ can deliver tremendous amounts of bandwidth under certain static conditions, as subscribers become more mobile, download speeds quickly drop off, leaving them with connections significantly slower than those anticipated on the first long-term evolution networks.   (Source: Kevin Fitchard, Connected Planet)

Despite America's iPhone Obsession, We're Behind the World's Mobile Calling Curve

For more advanced things like mobile commerce, the U.S. also ranks near the bottom among 16 countries included in the survey, which polled 4,100 people in Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

Only 12.9 percent of users in the U.S. said they make use of mobile commerce services. In China the figure was almost four times that amount, at 49.2 percent. Across all of Asia, 34 percent of people surveyed said they use mobile devices for banking, versus only 13 percent in the United States. Asian customers are also more likely to make payments with their mobile phones than are Americans.  (Source: Daniel Lyons, Newsweek)
