LG develops cell phone chip for fast downloads

LG Electronics Inc. claimed a step forward in the commercialization of the next generation of Internet capable handsets, demonstrating a modem chip with a download speed eight times that of the fastest mobile phones currently on the market.

The South Korean company unveiled the chip, created for a technology standard known as Long-Term Evolution, or LTE, at a research lab in Anyang, just outside Seoul, on Tuesday.

The so-called fourth generation technology, still under development, is vying with the rival WiMax standard to usher in super-fast Web browsing and downloads over mobile phones and other wireless devices.(Source: msnbc)

A future full of gadgets — no batteries required?

A dying battery on a cell phone or iPod is usually a simple inconvenience, but it can potentially ruin lives. Research now shows that high-tech devices will be able to power themselves in the future by converting pressure waves into energy. No recharge needed.

The findings, detailed in this fall in the journal Physical Review B, could have potentially profound effects for low-powered electronic devices such as laptops, personal communicators and a host of other computer-related devices used by everyone from the average consumer to law enforcement officers and even soldiers in the battlefield. (Source: Amelia Tomas, MSNBC)

Verizon HTC Touch Pro Review

HTC's Touch Pro has been one of the hottest Windows Mobile touch screen phones of 2008, and now three out of four of the top US carriers are offering it. Verizon is the latest to jump on the bandwagon with their version of the HTC Touch Pro XV6850. Like its relatives the HTC Touch Pro on Sprint and the HTC Fuze on AT&T, the Verizon Touch Pro features a VGA touch screen, HTC's TouchFLO 3D user interface, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera, EVDO Rev. A, GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth. It's sleek, it's shiny black and a fingerprint magnet, but when clean it looks lovely. The Verizon Touch Pro lacks the GSM version's diamond-faceted back, or Sprint's contrasting soft-touch finish and is instead a gloss black slab.
