Socket Unveils Connect!Agent Software and Windows Mobile 5.0 Support for GPS Nav Kit; Socket's Patent Pending Connect!Agent Software Provides Ultimate Bluetooth User Experience for Multiple Devices and Technologies

Socket Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:SCKT), an innovative provider of mobile productivity products, today announced enhancements to its GPS Nav Kit including: Socket's patent pending Connect!Agent software, new application features, updated North American and Western European map data and Windows Mobile 5.0 support. With the updated GPS Nav Kit, Socket now provides the best experience possible to users looking to add a complete, no-hassle cordless GPS navigation solution to their mobile device.

"The average Bluetooth user experience is full of complicated device and software setups, along with compatibility and security issues," said Donnie Wong, GPS product marketing manager at Socket Communications. "Our breakthrough Connect!Agent software greatly simplifies cordless connectivity and eliminates the hassles of managing multiple Bluetooth devices for a mobile user. With the introduction of our Connect!Agent technology alongside our Bluetooth software and hardware products, Socket has created the ultimate Bluetooth user experience."

Connect!Agent simplifies the Bluetooth setup, discovery and connection process of the Bluetooth GPS receiver from within the MyNavigator application. The Connect!Agent software works in the background, managing the Bluetooth connection activities with the Socket GPS receiver, so that configuration and setup is unnecessary. Once the receiver is turned on and the MyNavigator application is running, Connect!Agent will automatically discover and set up the Bluetooth connection. Connect!Agent will then continue to manage the Bluetooth connection between the GPS receiver and the computing device, requiring no interaction from the user. Connect!Agent is patent pending, and its integration with Socket's GPS Nav Kit is the initial implementation. Connect!Agent is capable of being implemented across multiple technologies, devices and protocol stacks.

Bluetooth(R) wireless technology introduced a new way for devices to connect with each other, offering customers new possibilities for using mobile computers with other devices without the hassle of cables. The Bluetooth GPS unit receives GPS satellite data and wirelessly sends the information to a handheld device, notebook or Tablet PC where a GPS enabled application displays location information.

Key Features and Benefits:

-- Provides seamless Bluetooth setup and automatic connection with host device
-- Updated MyNavigator application for true VGA Hi-res support in both portrait and landscape display modes
-- Updated NAVTEQ map data for more accurate street and additional POI information
-- Windows Mobile 5.0 support
-- Weather option to view weather information of any selected location
-- Ferry routes

Specifications:

Socket's upgraded GPS Nav Kit with Connect!Agent software is compatible with any Bluetooth enabled device running Pocket PC 2003/SE, Windows Mobile 5.0, Windows XP or Tablet XP. Reading with eBooks

After the initial group discussion, it was apparent that the users seemed quite worried about the readability of the screen. There was also a slight problem with the material: there were very few Finnish eBooks available, and Finnish material for children was even scarcer. For some languages, there was no material available in other formats besides PDF, and encrypted PDF files couldn’t be viewed on the Pocket PC device.

Readers also expressed some concern over the technical aspects of the devices. For instance, if the battery on the device should run out during a trip, reading would be abruptly interrupted. It was also seen as possible that the fear of breaking the device would prevent people from taking their eBook readers along when they leave home. Small size and other useful functions besides the eBook reader were also seen as contributing factors to the users’ willingness to carry the device along. Users were somewhat doubtful about the literary quality of self-published works, easily associated with the variety of material available on personal web sites.  (Source: eFinland)

DVD Catalyst/PocketDVD 3 Review

With the explosive growth of mobile devices, the need for making entertainment mobile has grown as well.  The proliferation of portable DVD players, MP3 players, and Windows Mobile devices along with ever increasing performance demands from these devices are a testimony to this trend.  The challenge - as it has always been - has been combining functions and features into a single device to prevent having to carry multiple devices.

Over the past two years, several developers have released DVD ripping applications which allowed users to copy a DVD to their hard disk for playback directly on their PC or laptop.  While the legality of such software - especially in the United States - has been a subject of debate, the developers have continued to produce these applications with ever increasing performance and quality.

DVD Catalyst is one such application.  The 3.0 version of PocketDVD, DVD Catalyst allows users to transform videos and DVDs into files on their PC. For the Windows Mobile user however, DVD Catalyst steps up to the fore, allowing users to rip an entire DVD into a few hundred megabytes while still maintaining a good quality image. (Source: Clinton Finch, ClintonFinch.com)

Pocket PC Phone May Leave You Squinting

The PPC-6700's bricklike design looks bulky, but it's about the same pocketable size as a Palm Treo 650. And my shipping unit packed lots of features, including a 1.3-megapixel camera that takes passable photos, a MiniSD slot for extra memory, Bluetooth, and support for Sprint's EvDO wireless broadband. (Sprint is just rolling out EvDO; for now, you're likelier to get online by using Sprint's 1XRTT network or the unit's built-in Wi-Fi connection.) (Source: Harry McCracken, PC World)

AnexTEK moboDA 3360 PocketPCPhone Review

First Impressions: Connectivity Plus

Hot from Taiwan, hot on specs and hot in performance: the new AnexTEK moboDA 3360 PocketPCPhone.
And, for a change, the English-speaking world is to get this phone before Asia does!
This latest incarnation from the Wistron company is a far cry from its earlier SP230 model for which we had the scoop review last year.
With Windows Mobile 5.0 running on a 520 MHz XScale PXA272 and all the connectivity you’d want plus a 1.3 MP camera this would be a serious contender if you’re looking for an all-in-one device.
How does it perform, how does it feel and how is the quality of the phone, the camera and the PDA?
Those questions we will look at in this First Impressions review.
We’ll have another, more in-depth review, in a few weeks.(Source: DigitalReviews.Net)
