If I could give Pocket PCs a push in what I regard as the right road, then this is the list that I would have them fulfil...(Source: Filip Norrgard, PDA Gold)

Socket Introduces World's First V.92 SDIO 56K Modem for Pocket PCs

Portable Data Communications Tool Provides Fast and Reliable Internet Access

Socket Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: SCKT), the Mobile Connection Company, today announced availability of its SDIO 56K Modem Card. The Socket SDIO 56K Modem Card transforms a Pocket PC with an SDIO slot into a portable data communications tool, enabling Pocket PC users to access the Internet with any available analog phone line.

As the latest addition to Socket's modem offerings, the Socket SDIO 56K Modem Card includes new speed and features to provide mobile users a fast and reliable alternative where broadband or Wi-Fi connections are unavailable. The Socket SDIO 56K Modem Card features V.92 technology that boosts upstream data rates between the user and Internet Service Provider (ISP) to reduce upload time for large files and email attachments. V.92 uses higher data compression ratios, which increases the data throughput speed to up to twice as fast as other V.90 only modems.

"As the leader in Mobility Friendly Solutions, Socket is committed to providing next generation connectivity products for handheld devices that are reliable and easy to use," said Vanessa Lindsay, product marketing manager at Socket Communications. "Whether the SDIO 56K Modem Card is used as a primary modem, or used as backup when Wi-Fi hot spots or high-speed Internet connections are not available, it is an invaluable tool for Pocket PC users that need to stay connected."

The Socket SD Modem supports a variety of advanced features including Quick Connect, Modem-On-Hold and Caller ID. A V.92 feature, Quick Connect reduces dial-up connection time by up to 50 percent by remembering phone line characteristics and storing them for later use. The modem also automatically signals the Pocket PC whenever incoming calls arrive, allowing the user to answer without dropping the Internet connection. With type-2 Caller ID, the modem displays information for an incoming call if the phone is already connected to another caller.

The modem supports V.44 data compression that allows greater compression of downstream data, particularly HTML, resulting in speeds 20 percent to 40 percent faster than current modems. In addition, the modem features link and data LEDs along with an internal speaker for monitoring connection status.

Supported Standards and Protocols

… ITU-T V.92 and V.90 56K flex data modulation
… Hayes AT commands
… Supports V.44 for improved data compression
… Asynchronous and full-duplex
… Automatic or manual answer and origination
… Standard error correction and data compression tools
… Auto-step downward compatibility for connection
… Fax transfer rate up to 33.6 kbps
… Class 1 fax command set

The Socket SDIO 56K Modem Card is compatible with most Pocket PCs, including Asus MyPal 730, Dell X50, HP iPAQ 17xx, 19xx, 211x, 221x, 24xx, 27xx, 39xx, 41xx, 43xx, 47xx, 515x, 51xx, 555x, 545x 631x, Symbol MC50. Government Housing Agency Taps SYWARE, Inc.’s Programming-Free, Visual CE 9 Software for Windows Mobile and Pocket PC Devices for Housing Inspections SYWARE Simplifies Operations and Improves Productivity- Wherever Inspectors Need to Work

SYWARE, Inc., announced a major county government housing agency in Maryland has successfully implemented and used the company’s Visual CE software to rapidly create, deploy and easy-to-use feature-rich database applications without programming on any Windows Mobile Pocket PC or Windows CE device- wherever they need to work. Before, inspectors navigated through sheets of paper for each unit inspection. Today, government housing inspectors simply click on electronic tables to complete reports in seconds to simplify their workloads. Municipalities use the Visual CE product line to easily transmit and track information regarding the status of operations in the field while reducing the amount of paperwork that is typically involved in the process. Housing office inspectors also use SYWARE on their Pocket PCs to simplify the data collection process and document information in the field. Information can be collected on the handheld and uploaded to the inspector’s PC or downloaded from the PC to the inspector’s handheld.

“Housing inspectors traditionally fill out pages of paperwork for each unit inspection, since this is a requirement of U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development,” said William Bogen, an IT Manager at a government housing agency in Maryland. “By combining the Pocket PC in conjunction with the power of SYWARE’s Visual CE software, we can dramatically simplify operations and improve productivity by reducing the drudgery of paperwork people have to cope with on a daily basis. We have found that even our non-technical users could use SYWARE’s product with ease,” said Bogen. “These devices, coupled with SYWARE’s software, definitely make life easier for housing inspectors, and this has enabled our department to ensure our legacy system is updated regularly. This is important, especially when the government comes in for an audit,” Bogen added.

As a result, developers and non-technical users, in a wide variety of markets can use Visual CE 9 to mobilize information between the enterprise and the field to rapidly convert PC or paper-based processes into fully mobile applications 10x faster than other market alternatives. User-specific data can be downloaded, collected, displayed, modified and automatically synchronized.

“The Visual CE product meets the specialized needs of municipalities, including a wide variety of other market verticals, to provide seamless access to essential information on or offline, at any time or place,” said Sy Danberg, President, SYWARE, Inc.

Pricing & Delivery
Visual CE 9 applications can be created for any Microsoft Windows Mobile, Windows CE, or Pocket PC handheld. Visual CE Lite Edition is priced at $19.99. Visual CE Personal Edition, with full forms design, relational database, and synchronization capabilities, is priced at $129. Visual CE Professional Edition includes all the features of Personal Edition and royalty-free distribution rights and it is available for $399. Visual CE Enterprise Edition it is priced at $599 and includes all the features of the Professional Edition plus SYWARE’s Report CE software and an mEnable (wireless connectivity) license.
