PhatWare Software Receives Two Honors In Smartphone & Pocket PC Magazine’s Best Software Awards

PhatNotes and CalliGrapher extend winning streak; PhatNotes Smartphone and PhatPad honored as finalists

Mountain View, Calif. – November 16, 2005 – PhatWare Corporation, a leading provider of software products and professional services for mobile and desktop computers, was awarded two Best Software Awards from Smartphone & Pocket PC magazine, and two additional PhatWare products were recognized as finalists. CalliGrapher won the "Utilities Handwriting" category for the fourth consecutive year, and PhatNotes was declared the winner of the "Utilities Notes" category for the fifth successive year.

This is the fifth year for the Best Software Awards. Eighty members of the Smartphone & Pocket PC magazine Board of Experts judged 768 Windows Mobile-based products in 130 Pocket PC, Smartphone and Developer categories to determine finalists and winners.

"We are ecstatic to have four of our products recognized in the Best Software Awards," said PhatWare President Stan Miasnikov. "Receiving these awards is affirmation of the accolades we’ve been hearing from customers for years."

As one of the most popular handwriting recognition products on the market, CalliGrapher recognizes cursive, print and mixed handwriting styles on devices running. The software uses advanced fuzzy logic and neural net techniques to recognize arbitrary letters and numbers. CalliGrapher has several features that increase usability and customizability for Windows Mobile-based users. CalliGrapher was recently upgraded to include, among several additional features, a new designated writing area called Write Pad and a Statistical Analyzer that learns the user’s writing habits and automatically fixes common recognition errors.

PhatNotes Professional Edition is a notes organizer that allows users to create notes and organize them by type, subject, creation and modification date. The software provides powerful text search, document security and email capabilities. PhatNotes includes an English spell checker and allows users to hyperlink between notes within PhatNotes, giving them the ability to cross reference notes. Additionally, PhatNotes provides direct access to PhatPad, which allows the user to attach handwritten notes in two taps.

"Phatware has supported the Windows Mobile platform with extraordinarily popular and useful products for years," said Hal Goldstein, publisher and executive editor of Smartphone & Pocket PC magazine. "We were please to once again to award CalliGrapher and PhatNotes as the best of their class for 2005."

Two additional PhatWare products were honored as finalists in the awards process. PhatPad was a finalist in the "Utilities Notes" category for Pocket PC software, the same category that PhatNotes won. PhatNotes Smartphone Edition was a finalist in the Notes category for Smartphone software.

"PhatWare Software continues to create award-winning productivity applications available for Windows Mobile-based devices," said Peter Bernard, group marketing manager of Microsoft®. "Windows Mobile provides increased platform flexibility and enhanced support for our partners' applications while maintaining a familiar, consistent development platform and user experience."

One man produces an atmospheric adventure for the Pocket PC, combining puzzles, arcade action and RPG elements.

Curse of the Pharaohs, which was recently selected as a finalist in Pocket PC Magazine’s Best Software Awards 2005, is being re-released for the Pocket PC. The format of the game is particularly well suited to the Pocket PC, and the game combines elements from both puzzle, action and RPG genres.

The game has received excellent reviews and the second, improved version is out on 3rd November. Among other things, the new version features the option to use the stylus rather than the d-pad for the main controls.

Curse of the Pharaohs is the debut release from Just Mobile Games and stars Harold Huxley, an intrepid English archaeologist, who is pitted against the mysterious Cult of Anubis. Harold puts his faith in his revolver, machete, dynamite and hammer as he runs, jumps, crawls and grabs his way through each level.

"I wanted to create a game with a more adult atmosphere than the typical cartoon-like Pocket PC games," says Justin Topham, the man behind Curse of the Pharaohs. In addition to programming the game engine, Justin is responsible for sound, graphics, music, storyline and level design.

"I also wanted to create a retro game that wasn’t just an exercise in cloning the past. Therefore it was critical to use the Pocket PC’s potential and create a rich, cinematic and interactive game. Harold Huxley can do a lot in Curse of the Pharaohs so the first level is a tutorial to get the player trained up. I didn’t want to just dump people in at the deep end."

The game captures the gore made popular in the 90s 3D games and reproduces it in a retro style. Flying body parts, death screams, splats and blood are included, but so is a liberal dose of dark humour.

Curse of the Pharaohs borrows ideas from RPG games including an easy to manage inventory and pre-expedition visits to a bazaar to stock up on supplies. Exploration is another important aspect of the game. Each of the 30 levels in the game is large, far bigger than the actual screen of the Pocket PC.

In creating Curse of the Pharaohs, Justin fulfilled a lifelong ambition to program a computer game that brought to life a world a little different from our own.

You can buy the full 30 level version priced $19.99 or download a 2 level FREE demo from the Just Mobile Games website at http://www.justmobilegames.com. (Source: Press Release)
